Q1 - How is my son's playing age determined? He will be 17 years old January 16th.
Your son's playing age is 16. He will still be 16 years old on January 1st so he plays the entire year as a 16 year old. The date that determines a players age is January 1st. American Legion Baseball changed its age determination date in 2003 from August 1st to January 1st.
Q2 - My son is 15 years old - Can he play American Legion Baseball?
Yes, he can play either in the Junior American Legion Baseball Program or the Senior American Legion Program. Normally, players 15 years old player participate in the Junior Program. There are 3 Age Divisions in the New Jersey Junior American Legion Baseball Program:
Junior Division - 17 years old & under
Sophomore Division - 15 years old & under
Freshman Division - 13 years old
Your son can play in the Sophomore Division or if he can make the team, he can play "Up" on the Junior Team or the Senior Team. Playing "Up" is not necessarily the best situation for your son. Each situation is different and you should carefully consider all factors, talk to your son and to both coaches
Q3 - Is a Player automatically on the Senior Team if he played for the Junior
Team sponsored by that Senior Team?
No, being on the Junior Team does not automatically allow the player to be on the sponsoring Senior Team. The recruiting rules for the senior program do not recognize where a player played in the Junior Division. Players if not attending a Base School must try out for the team whose Base School is closest to where they live. Some Senior Teams do not have junior teams - some junior teams do not have senior teams. Refer to National Rules on Recruiting Players.
